Electriphi develops end-to-end energy management and fleet operations software for light, medium, and heavy-duty commercial fleets. It’s EV fleet and energy management solutions save energy costs, increase reliability, and simplify the transition to electric vehicle fleets.

Electriphi is headquartered in San Francisco, California, with offices in San Jose and Development Center in India.

My role

I worked with the Product Design of the Electriphi until Feb 2019. I collaborated with a Product Manager, a Product Marketing and the Development Team to research, scope, plan and execute.

The challenge

We’re on the cusp of the largest energy transition in history. From oil to electrons.

The mobility industry is going through a radical transformation driven by electrification/self-driven vehicles and mobility as a service. As vehicles get electrified, they are fast becoming the major consumer of electricity.

The whole paradigm of how these vehicles will be "filled up" is changing. Fueling electric is very different from gasoline. Now, fleet owners have to worry about when they fuel electricity - a time of day, rate of charge and how much they can charge is quickly becoming a huge factor in making sure that fleets are charged and ready at the lowest cost possible.

While substantial growth in the number of electric vehicle fleets is replacing traditional fleets is great news for the planet, a new problem is slowly creeping in.

Charging of the vehicles is done with a focus on operational convenience but ends up resulting in increased peak demand on electricity and cost. Thus diminishing the electrification benefits both environmentally and economically.

How might we help fossil fuel fleet owners to plan the electric? transition so that they can leverage the benefits of electrification and Create a positive ecological impact?

How might we enable large EV fleet owners to manage electric? charging of vehicles in order to save energy costs, increase reliability, and simplify the transition to electric vehicle fleets?

The Solution

Electriphing the planet, the intelligent way

The entire value chain is being disrupted, from the production of energy to infrastructure to vehicles to fleets. The common thread that ties everything together is data and intelligence.

Human Knowledge + Software Intelligence = Efficient & Effective fleet charging

Electiphi's smart charging solution uses this intelligence to perform cost-optimized and reliable charging. Electriphi solution goes beyond the traditional approach of charging transaction management and builds intelligence with every charging session.

The data-driven intelligence that the elecriphi cloud has developed has the potential to revolutionize fleet management in charging, maintenance and various other areas.

Electriphi is helping solve these issues by making sure that all factors affecting the operations and charging of fleets are managed -resulting in 70% or more in savings in energy and operational costs.

The Process

The problem we were on the verge of solving was very fresh and unique, we almost had no products to look for competitor study or to get inspired from. All we had was the motivation to disrupt the electric revolution. Before we build anything complex we were constantly testing our ideas with real customers and iterated over and over to make things seamless. I am glad that I am a part of building this product from Zero to one.

Design & Research Tool Kit

Workshop and Research

Before we start, one of the barriers was the remote colloboration between two teams, founding team (Muffi & Sanjay) based in California and design team based in India. Our design team didn't know much about the electric vehicles and electricity industry. we had to learn the fundamentals before being able to collaborate on the ideas we are going to execute. Founding team helped us in grasping all the jargons and workflows.

Once we understood the domain, there were several questions in our heads. The founding team helped us patiently to get onboarded effectively.

Everything started with empathizing with the users and customers. Fleet owners and fleet managers. Since it was a remote collaboration, we didn't have direct interaction with end users. We choose to guide the team in California to collect the information on our behalf. They absolutely nailed it. We mapped some organizational & user personas along with user journeys.

The object oriented UX Approach

Treating content as a living, breathing thing with behaviours, properties and a lifecycle.

After receiving many insights through ground and desk research, we were still feeling void in our thinking. That's where object-oriented design thinking aided us.

The philosophy of OOUX is to encourage us as UX Designers to think about our core content as objects, and to think about this before considering any procedural actions. So before we dive straight into technical workflows and think about how the interface will function or appear, we can consider how our users will think about data as objects and align the product with a user's mental model. Typically, users as humans think about their environment as a system of objects, and so the theory here is that if we consider the content/data within our product/project as objects, we can connect with our users better by providing a user experience that aligns with their mental model.

Wireframes

We started visualizing our solutions through whiteboard drawings and low fidelity wireframes. This helped us to iterate better and generate more solutions for a given problem.

Branding/Visual Language

The logo is a metaphor for the power button and is created by merging greek symbol φ (phi) and power button. The idea of phi came from the mathematical brain of Sanjay. φ has a great role to play in mathematics, just as electriphi would play in the energy industry.

High Fidelity UI Design

Measuring success

Electriphi has launched the Electriphi Command Center tool which ensures critical fleet operations run smoothly with Smart Charging, integrations, and reporting. Vehicles charged and ready, at the most optimal costs. The tool is a self-serve web-based application that lets fleet managers break down factors affecting operations, fueling, and infrastructure.

Electriphi is partnering with energy utilities, infrastructure providers, and design engineering teams to make their Fleet Electrification Planning Tool available to customers. Utilities, in particular, can deploy the tool to educate fleet customers about things like peak load management, demand charge impact, and assess future fleet electrification strategies.

Electriphi has raised $3.5M in a Seed round on Feb 20, 2020. The investment was led by Wireframe Ventures, the Urban Innovation Fund, and Blackhorn Ventures, including participation from Acario Innovation and Lemnos Labs.
